No Light Without Dark

Any of you in the Johannesburg area are smack bang in the middle of another wave of load shedding. And along with the blackouts comes it’s constantly companion – complaining. It’s everywhere you go and from everyone you listen to. And sure, of course it’s far from great and yes, I know there has been an abundance of corruption, incompetence and mismanagements and etc, etc, blah, blah, blah. All of that is true and still all of that doesn’t change a single thing. The cumulative cacophony of complaining from the South African populace isn’t going to coalesce into some magic concoction that will keep the lights on. Furthermore, perhaps load shedding presents a potential opportunity rather than another whoa is me, doom and gloom situation.

No, Sleep NOW!

“I’ll sleep when I’m dead”. Or, “I’m too busy, no time for sleep”. How often have you heard that? How often have you said that? It cannot be overstated how foolhardy that statement is and how counterproductive and even dangerous that statement is to live by. Sleep is not something to bypass to have more life. 

Sleep is something that creates and enhances life.

“My body is being stubborn. At this awful point again where I don’t know to rest it or get it moving.”

I texted that to a hand and wrist specialist on the 25thof May 2018. I had just recently returned from a year abroad and was about six months into doing sustained exercise (in the form of weekly then bi-weekly Kundalini yoga classes) for the first time since ‘chronic fatigue’ (aka human ruination) flattened me in October 2014. The yoga was definitely doing its magic but my body was still in a lot of pain. Like, really, a lot. After three years of stagnation, I figured this should be expected but I was afraid of pushing too hard and finding myself back in bed. I was thrilled to be moving again but wasn’t all this pain and fatigue a sign to hit the breaks?

Paleo Meatconception

“So, like, you only eat meat?”

That’s the number one response I receive after I tell someone I eat paleo. That the paleo diet is a meat driven protocol is easily one of the two or three most common misconceptions. I think the name, an abbreviation of Palaeolithic, conjures up images of a caveman chomping down on a massive slab of brontosaurus. There’s also the powerful personal emotional attachment to one’s approach to food, which has ramped up of late as another one of the tribal signalling calls in our much felt yearning for community. Anyway, if you eat paleo, you definitely do eat red-meat, but you eat a whole lot more. Operative word being whole.

Seems like an easy answer….duh, obviously, of course I am.

Not so fast. It isn’t that simple. Yes, you are still a human being. But are you still a homo sapien? And if not, what does that mean for your health and wellbeing?
