You are a hero. Yup, you. No need to look around, I\u2019m not talking to anyone else. I\u2019m talking to you. So, let me say it again \u2013 you are a hero<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Now, it\u2019s not quite that literal. It actually is, but it also isn\u2019t. \ud83d\ude42 <\/p>\n\n\n\n

It actually depends on you<\/strong>.
It depends on whether you will answer the call. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Will you?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

Today we steep ourselves in The<\/strong> Hero\u2019s Journey<\/strong>, an archetypal tale made mainstream by myth mastermind Joseph Campbell in his 1949 classic The Hero with a Thousand Faces.<\/em> You may have heard of Campbell, he\u2019s most definitely back in vogue right now. Frustrated and disappointed with the limitations of sterile rationality it appears society is making a major shift (return<\/em> really<\/em>) back to the magic of story<\/strong>. And The<\/strong> Hero\u2019s Journey<\/strong> is not only a story – it\u2019s the<\/strong><\/em> story<\/em>.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

This story is everywhere. It\u2019s every movie ever made and every book ever written concerning transformation. Whether it\u2019s one descriptor or the other \u2013 transformation, metamorphosis, evolution, renewal, resurrection or rebirth \u2013 at the crux is change<\/strong>. From Buddha to Moses to Luke and Leia to any of the far too many superheroes on screen nowadays they\u2019ve all walked this universal path. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

And so have you<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

You\u2019re somewhere on it. Because you\u2019re alive and because life is one mega hero\u2019s journey composed of countless micro ones. And because you are here.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You\u2019re here because you need to make a change<\/strong>. Because there\u2019s a voice inside urging you to do something<\/strong>. That\u2019s why you\u2019re a hero. Because regardless of your health and wellbeing goals at its most distilled it is about making a change in your life<\/strong>. About not surrendering to how things are and striving for how you want them to be<\/strong>. About shedding the old and living anew<\/strong>. About putting what was behind you and creating what can be<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

About living fuller, healthier, stronger, truer and happier.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The journey is made up of three key phases \u2013 Departure, Initiation and Return. Departure is all about knowing you have to go somewhere and do something but you wrestle with doubt, fear and hesitation. Initiation begins once you\u2019ve accepted the task, crossed into the arena of challenge and face what will be many trials and tribulations. This is where you are shaped by struggle. Finally, you Return from the other world changed<\/strong> \u2013 finally in control of your life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Whatever it is you are facing<\/strong>, whatever the magnitude, it is a heroic endeavor<\/strong>. This framework can be supplanted onto any objective. Let\u2019s take one of the most common wellbeing goals \u2013 shedding some pounds. Yes, that too is heroic. You know what you want to do and probably even how to but it\u2019s hard, and you keep resisting the change you want to make. Finally, you get to it, you\u2019re in the fight, following some food plan, getting to the gym, not letting those tasty treats tempt you and eventually little by little you do it. Now, you return to your old world not only unbent and unbroken but wiser and stronger than ever before. A hero\u2019s journey completed. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

And then something strange and magical happens – you realize the journey, the crisis, the pain, the suffering was never about the weight or depression or all the many fears. It was about you re-discovering and manifesting your true self<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

 \u201cIdentify yourself as the hero and that there are going to be patches of deep struggle <\/em>
and that is what defines the hero. That\u2019s what you signed up for. <\/em>
And it\u2019s the overcoming of these things that give you the character and <\/em>
defines who you are<\/strong>. <\/em>
In the overcoming of this is where the steel of my soul is <\/em>
going to be forged in the fire of this depression.<\/em>\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

I love the hero\u2019s journey. And it personally manifested itself ever clearer the clearer I could see<\/strong>. Now everyday, whether it’s a good day or a challenging one, to take another step forward, I say – <\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Go hero, go.”<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n
